What to See and Do

The popular Dales village of Masham is 5 minutes drive away from Charlcot Lodges. There are 2 colourful weekly markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Masham has 2 breweries, both making real ales in the traditional way.

The Black Sheep Brewery and Theakstons Brewery have excellent visitor centres and brewery tours. The 3rd full week of July is Masham Steam Engine and Fair Organ Rally and the end of September is Masham Sheep Fair. Masham offers a good range of shops and some lovely tea rooms and pubs with good food. Nearby Brymor Ice Cream parlour offers 30 different ice cream flavours.

In the heart of James Herriot country, you are surrounded by numerous places of interest and beauty such as the magnificent Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral and Middleham Castle - seat of Richard III. Visit historic houses and gardens such as Newby Hall, Castle Burton Hall and RHS Harlow Carr Gardens.

Charlcot lodges make a great base to explore Wensleydale, Swaledale and Nidderdale, characterised by wild flower meadows, the stone walls of the valleys and striking heather moorland. The Lake District, North Yorkshire Moors, Whitby and Scarborough are all easily reached for great days out. Sightseeing and shopping trips to nearby York and Harrogate are a favourite of many visitors.

Sporting and Family Activities

Sporting activities are available with a wide range of golf courses, sport and coarse fishing, mountain biking, horse riding and swimming close to Charlcot Lodges. Walking is an excellent way to discover Masham and the dales, taking in beauty spots such as Aysgarth Falls and Hardraw Force

For great family days out choose from several attractions such as Lightwater Valley Theme Park, The Forbidden Corner and Big Sheep Little Cow Farm Visitor Centre. Brimham Rocks offers a wonderful area for all ages to explore and Hawes makes an interesting day out with its Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre.
